Visit Aberdeen, the Granite City

by Margie Macleod

Aberdeen is the 3rd largest city in Scotland and is widely known as the “Granite City” but is also known as the “Silver City (with the Golden Sands)”. Although the area shows evidence of being inhabited for over eight thousand years Aberdeen is a thoroughly modern city with a strong association with the oil and gas industries.

As you would expect in any modern city Aberdeen has an interesting array of art galleries and museums. In contrast the city has one of the most lively night scenes in Scotland with a huge selection of restaurants, cafes, bars, pubs and nightclubs. Around the area of the 2 mile long beach can be found fairground rides and other types of entertainment for the younger folk (or younger minded adults).

It is along the Beach Esplanade that you will find the excellent House of Fun. The House of Fun is simply huge, spread over 2 floors you will find all the latest video games, hi-tech simulators, driving games etc. together with laser tag, the foam factory, the family amusement arcade and much more fun stuff for the kids.

As well as finding the usual gift and souvenir shops you will find an over 18 cash arcade and bingo. There are a few places to eat including the Central Park Deli and the Motown Bar. It is in the Motown Bar that the entertainment is a little more geared towards adults with a large television and a BBQ terrace. The Motown Bar is also a popular venue for live music.

Of course many people visit Aberdeen to do some shopping and for many in the surrounding rural areas this is vitally important. The main shopping district is around Union Street which has some of the usual retail outlets and other shops however many folk head to the Bon Accord St Nicholas Shopping Centre which is a large indoor shopping mall on two levels. There are several other shopping centers/malls including The Academy and The Mall which are well worth visiting as they contain other types of shops including more upmarket stores and different high street brands.

The city of Aberdeen has a proud tradition in sporting excellence.

There are eight golf courses in Aberdeen six of which are public (three at Hazlehead , two at Balnagask Golf Course and Auchmill Golf Course) and two owned by the Royal Aberdeen Golf Club (Silverburn & Balgownie). The Royal Aberdeen Golf Club is the sixth oldest golf club in the world having been founded in 1780 as the Society of Golfers at Aberdeen which changed it’s name, in 1815, to Aberdeen Golf Club and awarded the “Royal” status in 1903.

In 1903 Aberdeen FC, Aberdeen’s main soccer team, was formed. The team went on to have some success in Europe and, in the 1980’s, the football club won the Scottish Premier League a total of three times. Much of this success has been credited to Sir Alexander Chapman Ferguson CBE who was their manager at the time. Besides soccer the folk of Aberdeen enjoy all manner of sports and there are excellent facilities spread across the city.

Obviously the House of Fun is great for kids but there is also much to keep the adults entertained. For those who like to gamble there is a cash arcade and bingo. There are also places to buy gifts and souvenirs but if you want your entertainment a little more adult then there are also various places to eat with such features as large screen tv and even live music.

For the avid shopper there are plenty of shopping opportunities to be found in Aberdeen with the main malls being The Bon Accord St Nicholas, The Mall and The Academy shopping centers. The main high street shopping area is based around Union Street.

In 1903 the club was awarded Royal status and was renamed the “Royal Aberdeen Golf Club” (having changed it’s name to Aberdeen Golf Club in 1815) and the club has two golf courses, the Silverburn Course and the Championship Links at Balgownie. There are six public golf courses in Aberdeen; Hazlehead (3 courses, 2 x 18-hole, 1 x 9-hole Pitch and Putt), Balnagask Golf Course (2 courses 1 x 18-hole, 1 x 6-hole) and Auchmill Golf Course.

In 1903 Aberdeen FC, Aberdeen’s main soccer team, was formed.
