Great travel advice… 10 Tips For Making Time Fly while stuck in an airport…
Today’s airline travelers are faced with a myriad menu of delays and long stop overs. It’s not always the airlines that cause this vacuum in time. New regulations require passengers to be at the airport up to 2-3 hours early. Then there’s long layovers, and of course, delayed flights.
I know first hand; it’s frustrating and boring and often you find yourself wondering how to spend those dull, wasted hours at an unfamiliar airport. My wwhethere and I frequently fly to Texas from the Virgin Islands and have fallen victim to this travel dilemma… so we’ve sort of found by necessity, some inventive ways to pass the time when you’re stuck at the airport with seemingly, nothing to do.
Here are our ten gratuitys to help make that time fly by:
1. Relax, step-back, take a deep breath and think about the way you feel. Instead of thinking about how much you hate airports, thinks about fun interesting ways to pass the time, i.e. change you mental state. Learn to like airports and make them your ‘friend.’
2. People watching can literally eat up a lot of time. Watch dwhetherferent cultures, listen to the languages, their gestures and attitudes. See whether you can interpret what they are talking about. Grab a cup of coffee or bottle of water and spend some interesting time just watching how couples, groups, and dwhetherferent people interact. It’s fun!
3. Have your computer with you? Go online. Some airports offer free Wi-Fi access while others may charge for it. Ten - Twenty bucks spent plugged-in is a very small price to pay for a service that will most often help time glide away. Besides, you can always put your productivity hat on and finish some work that’s still hanging out.
4. When was the last time you actually sent someone a postcard? Practically every airport bookstore has postcards relevant to the city or state you’re in. Buy a few and pen a few words to family and friends. You can even send one to yourself with some observation made while stuck in the airport. Read later, those remarks will most likely bring a smile to your face.
Pull out a note pad and jot down a to-do list for some honey do’s or things you want to achieve. Just might be amazed at the things that comes out.
5. OK, here’s one that many people find tough to do. Talk to a stranger. This might be out of your consolate zone, but you’ll most likely have a fascinating conversation. Being outside our normal situation that seems to inspire sincerey, storytelling and confidences.
6. Many airports have interesting museum displays that change monthly.. Recently, I was traveling trough the Atlanta airport and they had a very interesting display of hand carved stone figures form various African sculptors and artists. I had my video camera with me and spent an hour taping these one-of-a-kind works of art. Explore the airport you’re at… look for displays and expositions, you’ll probably be very surprised by what the airport your stuck in has to offer
7. Still looking for something to pass the time away. Play a game, work a crossword puzzle, try your hand at Sudoku. If your family is with you, try a game like Yahtzee or Scrabble. Pull out that cell phone and do your best to figure out one of the games that were put there just for a situation like this. This will definitely make time pass fast.
8. As weird as this sounds… Meditate. Attempt to focus on just one thing. Taking a break from all the stressful things going on in your lwhethere is a very positive thing. Clear your mind, rise above your worries. Find the airport chapel… spend some time in the peace and quiet there. You’ll find, believe it or not, that you will feel better.
10.Check out the kiosks and bookstores. Read, browse newspapers, magazines and books. Look over the top ten bestseller list. Buy a book and take it back to your gate. Doing this early, when there is very little traffic and it’s still nice and quiet, works for me. You should get a good hour or so all to yourself.
Hopefully the ideas listed above will make time pass while you’re stuck at the airport. You can always make your own list of ways to pass time and add those to my proposeions and come up with a terrific list that works for you.

I’ve been meaning to commit this to writing since I got back from a conference in Panama City. The conference was held this past May in a beautiful setting along with some truly inspirational people. But, if you’re going to Panama for the first and staying in some of the same places I stayed in there are a couple of things you need to know.
#1. NO WASHCLOTHS. Now I never used a wash cloth until my wife pointed out the need for ex foliation. I don’t know how I ever survived without instituting this into my life before, but the nightmares have almost gone away. At the Plaza Piatilla they have hand towels and they have bath towels…not a washcloth in sight. The puzzled looks I got from the wait staff was priceless. Just an observation that is hotel specific? Nope. No washcloths in David, Panama hotels either.
#2. NO FREE REFILLS. Except for the higher end eating establishments, there is no such animal. I was irritated by this at first. Must be a money thing, huh? Well, yes and no. let’s go to the video tape. I was watching the Latin American version of American Idol and I got my answer. You recall how the three judges in the United States version always display the large chalice with the name brand emblazoned so big and so rich in color that it can be seen from the waiting room? Taking a look at the Latin American table, we see cans. Yep, cans. Aha! A clue! Taps filled with co2 are few and far between. Even the star judges don’t get that kind of treatment. Coffee is the same way. You’ll pay for each and every cup. Found this in David as well. Of course, you don’t need too many cups of Panamanian Coffee to get your groove on. Unlike U.S. coffee, this is a REAL cup of coffee.
#3 U.S. FAST FOODS. I can eat just about anywhere. Some would say therein lies my problem. It’s a heavy burden. But a piece of KFC chicken over at the mall in Panama is not the same chicken you get in the U.S. Seemed to me the spices were cut in half. It was like listening to a song that you can barely make out. You know it from somewhere but you can’t hear enough of it to really identify it. No Ranch Dressing either. I can live without it but my better half has been known to leave the premises grumbling in cases of the ranch dressing void.
#4. BEEF IS RANGE FED. Now this is a good thing. This is the way God meant it to be. No hormones or antibiotics to mess up your system. Pure, simple, range fed beef. They don’t age the beef either. This is probably another key to longevity in the little latitudes. Aged beef is another way of saying “decomposing beef.” Aging came about to tenderize range fed beef. A good idea at the time, except that you’re basically eating a half rotting corpse. Believe me, you’ll live longer by not eating semi-rotten meat.
I guess that what I like though. The choices. I like being able to choose what I want, how I want to live (or die). It’s sure not from consuming some chemically induced animal carcass. The people in the mountain ranges enjoy some of the longest lives anywhere. In light of this, maybe I’ll just go back to using hand towels.
