Hiking has many physical and mental benefits but there are some drawbacks. Blisters can be at least annoying and many times painful. They can turn your enjoyable trek into a torturous ordeal.

Friction on your skin from your socks and boots causes blisters to form. This friction is increased when moisture forms in your boots. You may not notice a blister until it’s too late so it’s difficult to completely prevent. The possibility of forming blisters can be minimized if you invest in some proper hiking footwear.

A good pair of socks is essential. Most are made from natural fibers such as cotton, wool or silk. With new technology, there are man made materials that can help hold in warmth but also allow wicking. Wicking means the perspiration from your feet is released and can evaporate so less friction is caused. These man made materials include Lycra and polyester and they’re usually blended with natural fibers; usually around 25 percent synthetic, 75 percent natural. Proper hiking socks will also be constructed so there are no ridges on the sole so there is less friction.

A good pair of hiking boots is another must. Not only do they offer proper support and traction for rough terrain but they are also designed to prevent blisters. Hiking boots will be stiff and while they will loosen up a little after wear, they are designed to be stiff so they offer proper support. In any case, when purchasing your boots make sure they fit properly and don’t think that you can “break them in”. Don’t penny pinch on boots; you usually get what you pay for.

When you’re hiking it’s important to keep your feet as dry as possible to lessen the amount of friction. If you take your boots and socks off during your hike make sure your feet are dry before you put them back on. It’s also a good idea to bring a few changes of dry socks, especially if you’ll be taking a long or overnight hike.

No matter how many precautions you take, getting blisters is almost unavoidable so think ahead and bring some bandages, a disinfected needle and anti-bacterial cream. When you feel a blister start to develop immediately stop and clean the area and place a bandage on it. If a blister does form, puncture it with a needle, drain it, clean it and put disinfectant cream and a bandage on it. Once you’re home you should clean it again and remove any dead skin before redressing it.

If you buy proper footwear and take these precaution you will lessen the chances of getting blisters and be prepared if they do form.

Don’t forget to wear a referee’s whistle around your neck under your blouse. It might come in handy.

Consult guide books on the countries and areas that you are traveling to or through to give you a heads up on what to expect. Also, carry a foreign language phrase book with you to help you communicate with people when you get there.

It’s not advisable to wear expensive looking jewelry, watches, carrying cases for cameras, or even designer handbags. You do not want to tempt any possible muggers or robbers. Take along a conservative outfit with you just in case you need one to wear on certain occasions.

If you are planning to travel alone, it is best to travel light. One advantage is that you will be more mobile because you aren’t loaded down with luggage. If it’s not too small for your belongings, a wheeled, carry-on bag, or a backpack may be you best bet. It’s important to have one hand free at all times. If you can have two hands free, it’s is even better. You should get a shoulder bag that has a strong, wide strap that fits over your head. Wearing a shoulder bag this way may help prevent a robber from grabbing the bag and running away with it. The shoulder bag should have secure, zippered pockets.

- Wipes and tissue. Whenever you need it for cleaning up something.

When you get there

Line must be followed and two or three must be made as travel buddies so that one can keep an eye on the other; it also stops falling back. This way kids who are a bit introvert get the opportunity of making friends.

On the trip home

Encourage sleeping; milk comes handy as long walks makes children feel cranky as they are exhausted so while going back they can sleep after a drink of milk.

Always be prepared, that is my motto, you do not have to drive a car that should have been scrapped just because you want to save a few dollars on the rental. If you are lucky and decide to book a fly-drive deal for instance, then you may find the rental company has upgraded your vehicle but this is less likely if you book with the airline themselves. Unfortunately, airlines although convenient aren’t really the more economic way to go, their budget car rental prices are hardly budget, and tend to be higher than those of outside firms.

Just remember that you are likely to come across some amazing deals on the internet if you look. In fact many car rental web sites will only give a discount if you book online with them. Do not always take the first offer that comes your way, unless you are limited on time because there are bound to be other discount offers around if you have the time to take a look. The biggest benefit to all this is it can take only a few minutes to do this if you are using the internet.

If you are phoning, ask for discounts that can be applicable to you, remember even when you’ve scored the best deal, there is still that one last ditch of a possibility that one of your credit cards support the company and provide discounts. If you are a member of the military or government, you may be eligible for discounts negotiated with a number of budget car rental companies on your behalf.

The only problem you may find is that a budget rental car may not have been looked after with the same care as a more reputable company and there may some damage which you do not want to be liable for. In addition, try to check out all the accessories, wipers, radio, brakes, seatbelts etc, to familiarize yourself with them, and also to check if they work, like the previous tip, you might be charged for this if you don’t inform them.

Before you decide to use the budget rental car company’s insurance, take a look at your own policy as you will probably find that it covers rental vehicles as well. Why pay for insurance for budget car rental when your own auto insurance policy will cover it even if it isn’t a great deal. Whatever the case, you must still have insurance cover when you rent a car so don’t try and skip it to save money.

If you are an early bird you may find this last tip useful; when picking up your budget rental car, collect it first thing, just as the staff open the office doors because many of the vehicles will not have been returned and they may offer you an upgrade for free.
